Middle School
Welcome to the Middle School at the American International School of Conakry. These middle grades are critical years for our children – ones that are important for the development of their self-esteem and their life-long attitudes towards learning and relationships.
Our Middle School provides students with many opportunities – inside and outside the classroom - to develop their academic skills, acquire knowledge and understanding, and explore special talents and interests. The Middle School offers a diverse and challenging program that is specifically designed to meet the needs of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students who are in the process of transition from children to young adults. Special attention is focused on meeting social, emotional and physical needs, as well as their academic development. The AISC program strives to provide an environment within which students can explore, set limits and develop personal relationships, together with a nurturing faculty who are aware of their unique needs during this stage of their development. It is designed to be a bridge between the elementary years and high school.
The core academic classes in the middle years are Language Arts, Social Studies, Math and Science. In addition, middle school students take French and Physical Education year round, as well as exploratory classes in Art, Music, and IT. After school activities are offered to students from Tuesday through Thursday for each semester, from 15h00 to 16h00. After School Activities include; sports, arts and crafts, academic support, drama, chess club, swimming, internet magazine and more.
In the middle school, good time management skills and personal reflection on assignment feedback are important factors leading to academic success. Many assignments will require that students develop timelines and completion strategies that will provide balance to their daily workload.
Grade placement for students entering the Middle School is determined by several factors: age, social and emotional maturity, grade most recently completed, and academic achievement. Students, who transfer to AISC in January from a school system with an academic calendar ending in December, are generally placed in the same grade level that they just completed. Entrance assessments are given to all applicants in mathematics, reading comprehension and writing, to determine their achievement level and subsequent placement.
Teachers are focused on providing every student with an excellent education based on Middle School Beliefs and Goals and current instructional practices.
